Comhairle na nÓg

The Louth Junior Council was established in 2002 and consists of twenty six Junior Councillors from across the county. The current twenty six councillors are in office since November 2006 and elections are due to take place in November 2008. Junior Councillors are elected through the twelve secondary schools in Co. Louth. The Junior Council election process itself mirrors the local election process, proportional representation through single transferable vote (PRSTV).

The objective of Louth Junior Council is to give young students the opportunity to experience the democratic process involved within the Local Authority system in Ireland. The Junior Council meet every two months in the Louth County Council Offices and throughout their current term in office, they have discussed the following topics:

  • Drugs and Alcohol Usage
  • Road Safety
  • Youth Exclusion
  • Hospital Services in the North East
  • Recreational facilities for Young People
  • Student Discount Cards
  • Positive Youth Education
